Portrait of Dr. Rexford S. Ahima

The American Society for Clinical Investigation is proud to present the ASCI Scientific Sessions: a spotlight on distinguished investigators and their contributions to biomedical research. The Scientific Sessions are free and open to all, with a goal to create a space for our community, beyond the ASCI’s annual meeting, to gather and celebrate discovery.

Rexford S. Ahima, MD, PhD, is Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Diabetes, Professor of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, and Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Ahima earned his MD from the University of Ghana Medical School, completed intercalated research training at the University of London, and received his PhD in Neuroscience from Tulane University. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine Jacobi Medical Center and Weiler Hospital and fellowship training in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. Before joining Johns Hopkins, he was a tenured Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Ahima has made significant contributions to our understanding of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic regulation, particularly the role of adipokines in energy homeostasis and glucose and lipid metabolism.

Dr. Ahima was previously Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and currently serves as an Associate Editor of JAMA. Recognition of his achievements include election to the ASCI (2005), the Association of American Physicians, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

This event will be moderated by E. Dale Abel, MBBS, DPhil, ASCI Councilor (2009-2012), and William S. Adams Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Chair and Executive Medical Director, Department of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine and UCLA Health.
