Barney S. Graham, MD, PhD
New Vaccine Realities and the Future of Pandemic Preparedness
Description
The American Society for Clinical Investigation is proud to present the ASCI Scientific Sessions: a bi-monthly spotlight on distinguished investigators and their contributions to biomedical research. The Scientific Sessions are free and open to all, with a goal to create a space for our community, beyond the ASCI’s annual meeting, to gather and celebrate discovery.
Barney S. Graham is an infectious diseases physician and scientist. He completed a BA from Rice University, MD from the University of Kansas, and PhD at Vanderbilt University. He retired as Deputy Director of the NIAID Vaccine Research Center in 2021 and is now Professor and Director of the David Satcher Global Health Equity Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine.
Dr. Graham is a thought leader on emerging viral diseases and pandemic preparedness. He is best known for his research on RSV pathogenesis, structure-based vaccine design, application of mRNA delivery technology, and rapid COVID-19 vaccine development. He is an inventor on vaccines and monoclonal antibodies approved for human use for the prevention or treatment of RSV, COVID-19, and Ebola.
Dr. Graham is an elected member of the ASCI, and the National Academies of Sciences, Medicine, and Inventors. He’s an inductee of the National Inventors Hall-of-Fame and has received multiple awards for the advancement of science including the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award, the National Academy of Sciences John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science, and the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Time magazine recognized him as one of the world’s 100 most influential individuals and a Hero of the Year in 2021 and as one of the 100 most influential in health in 2024.
This event will be moderated by Kyu Y. Rhee, MD, PhD, Co-Chair of the ASCI’s Physician-Scientist Development Committee, and Professor of Medicine and of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College.
