The Louis W. Sullivan, MD, Award recognizes the significant scholarly achievements of a middle-career physician-scientist who is underrepresented in medicine and science. The recipient of the annual award receives a $10,000 honorarium and presents the Sullivan Lecture at the Society’s annual meeting.
Louis Wade Sullivan (born 1933) is a hematologist, health care advocate, and policy leader. Among his many achievements, Dr. Sullivan was founding dean and president of Morehouse School of Medicine and served as US Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). According to staff records, Dr. Sullivan was the first Black physician-scientist elected to the ASCI (1972; view profile).
Born in Atlanta in 1933, Dr. Sullivan spent his early childhood in rural Georgia before graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. He received his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College and medical degree in 1958 from Boston University School of Medicine, where he was the only Black student in his class. Dr. Sullivan completed an internship and residency in hematology at New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center. He began his teaching career at Harvard Medical School and founded the Boston University Hematology Service in 1967.
In 1975 Dr. Sullivan became the first dean and director of medicine at Morehouse, serving as founding president when the medical school became independent. Appointed HHS Secretary by President George H.W. Bush in 1989, Dr. Sullivan established the Office of Minority Programs, which led to the formation of the National Institute on Minority Health and Disparities (NIMHD), and initiated the NIH Women’s Health Research program. He oversaw the appointment of NIH’s first woman director, Dr. Bernadine Healy, as well as the first woman and Hispanic surgeon general, Dr. Antonia Novello. Dr. Sullivan returned to Morehouse in 1993 and became emeritus president in 2002.
Dr. Sullivan continued to champion health advocacy both in the United States and abroad, co-founding Medical Education for South African Blacks and the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools. He served as co-chair of the President’s Commission on HIV and AIDS (2001–2006) and as chair of the President’s Commission on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (2002–2009). The Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions was established in 2005 to increase the representation of members of minoritized ethnic and racial populations across health care and academic medicine; the Alliance was merged into the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2022.
Dr. Sullivan was elected to the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine) in 1975 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994, and received the 2008 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Award for Humanitarian Contributions to the Health of Humankind.

Nominees
ASCI members who are UiMS and were elected within 5 years of the Award year are eligible. In addition, nominees:

- must fit may not be current members of the ASCI Council and/or Physician-Scientist Engagement Committee;
- may be nominated for only one ASCI award (for example, a nominee for the Ropes Award may not be nominated for the Sullivan Award, Korsmeyer Award, Harrington Prize, or Scharschmidt~Crawford Award);
- must provide the following:
- a personal statement (750-word limit) on their scientific achievements, with attention to relevant personal and career history (including a statement on diversity), mentoring experience, and service to the community;
- a full curriculum vitae; and
- 3 most-significant publications, each with a 50-word annotation, followed by the member’s role in the publication, the journal name and publication year, and the Pubmed ID noted as “PMID:12345”;
- must complete the ASCI’s demographics survey; and
- must provide information regarding their research domain(s).
Nominators
- must be ASCI members; current members of the ASCI Council and Physician-Scientist Engagement Committee are excluded; and
- must provide a statement regarding the nominee (500-word limit).
The ASCI’s Physician-Scientist Engagement Committee reviews nominations and submits recommendations to the ASCI Council for approval.
Definition of UiMS
The ASCI defines underrepresented in medicine in science as follows: Underrepresented in medicine and science (UiMS) refers to populations that are underrepresented relative to their numbers in the general US population. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, physician-scientists who identify in the following racial and/or ethnic groups: Black/African American, Hispanic or Latin American, Native American/American Indian or Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander; individuals with disabilities: physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; and those with an educationally or financially disadvantaged background.
