The American Society for Clinical Investigation is proud to present the ASCI Scientific Sessions: a monthly spotlight on distinguished investigators and their contributions to biomedical research. The Scientific Sessions are free and open to all, with a goal to create a space for our community, beyond the ASCI’s annual meeting, to gather and celebrate discovery.

Babak Javid, MB BChir, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Division of Experimental Medicine, University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Javid trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge, completed residency in general (internal) medicine in London and returned to Cambridge as a Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Training Fellow for graduate studies under Paul Lehner, investigating cross-presentation by human dendritic cells to cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Following specialist training in infectious diseases, he went to Harvard as an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellow to train with Eric Rubin in mycobacterial genetics, where he first became interested in ‘unique’ aspects of the mycobacterial translation apparatus. From 2011 to 2020 he was Principal Investigator at the Tsinghua University School of Medicine, Beijing, China.

Dr. Javid’s group focuses on tuberculosis pathophysiology from the perspective of both the pathogen and host immunity, and are interested in the role of translational errors in adaptation by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the role and function of humoral immunity to tuberculosis. Dr. Javid served as Co-Chair of the B cell / Antibody group of the Collaboration for TB Vaccine Discovery from 2018-2023 and serves on the WHO working group for a tuberculosis vaccine roadmap. He is currently an Investigator of the Wellcome Trust and was elected to the ASCI in 2023.

This event was moderated by Kyu Y. Rhee, MD, PhD, Vice Chair of the ASCI’s Physician-Scientist Development Committee, and Professor of Medicine and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Weill Cornell Medical College.
